THE COMPACTION OF COARSE FILLS

There is limited information on procedures for the construction and control of compaction of road embankments using coarse fill material. This discussion note draws on sources of information available and suggests that in drawing up specifications for such works the following points should be considered: (a) definition of coarse fill as (I) rock fill with particles up to 1 M maximum size and a proportion of fines less than 10 per cent or (II) random fill with particles up to 0.5 M maximum size and 10 to 20 per cent of fine material, (b) the maximum size of either type of material to be not more than two thirds of the thickness of a loose layer, (c) maximum thickness of a rock fill layer to be 2 M, and of a random fill layer - 800 mm, (d) a site trial is recommended to determine a suitable compaction procedure, but a minimum of six passes of a vibrating roller is advisable. For the control of compaction the use of a compaction meter (accelerometer mounted on a vibrating roller) should be investigated because of the advantages such a system may have in providing immediate control by the roller driver. Further data on the experiences of sras in the construction of embankments using coarse fills would be useful, eg, information on materials, thicknesses, types of plant, and the degree of settlement.
