THE INCIDENCE OF ALCOHOL IN ACCIDENTS AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS
Although traffic signals have been shown to be effective in reducing accident severity and frequency overall, little is known about how the alcohol- affected driver performs within the signalized intersection environment. This paper studies the over- representation of alcohol- related accidents in some road user movements. It demonstrates that alcohol is over- represented in rear- end and single- vehicle/ out- of- control accidents, relative to other accident types occurring at signalised intersections. The main countermeasures with potential for reducing these accidents appear to be improved lane delineation and signal conspicuity. (Author/TRRL)
