THE VISUAL FUNCTION IN DRIVING

LA FUNZIONE VISIVA NELLA GUIDA

This article defines 7 stages from the moment of seeing to the initiation of reaction. The first stage consists in the transmission of eye information (received as stimulii on to the retina) to the brain for processing. In stage two this information is processed into a recognisable image of the reality which provided the stimulus. The third stage consists in differentiating the objects comprising the "seen" reality. The arrival of conscious awareness is stage four. Stage five consists in the psychic reconstruction of the external reality in association with factors which define the relationship between the individual and the surroundings. The sixth and seventh stages correspond respectively to the decisions "what to do" and "how to do it". (TRRL)
