PRESTRESSED STEEL BRIDGE A WINNER
A cable-stressed plate girder bridge that saved Idaho 20% on steel tonnage compared with a conventional design and brought a low bid 20% under estimate is also providing a winner for the contractor. The cable-stressed steel design by T. Y. Lin International, San Francisco, was commissioned by the Idaho Department of Transportation (IDOT), working with the Federal Highway Administration in an attempt to make steel more competitive with concrete. The weight of the steel is cut from the usual 30 to 24 psf. And the layout, with just four girders and deck overhangs of 8 ft rather than the conventional 2 one-half to 3 ft, also permits a cost-saving slimming of the piers and narrowing of their hammerhead caps.
