INHERENT SETTLEMENT OF EMBANKMENTS: THE INFLUENCE OF COMPACTNESS, THE DEGREE OF SATURATION, AND THE METHOD OF COMPACTION
TASSEMENT PROPRE DES REMBLAIS: INFLUENCE DE LA COMPACITE, DU DEGRE DE SATURATION ET DU MODE DE COMPACTAGE
The presented research deals with the influence of the filling conditions on the long term settlements of embankments. It was started in the laboratory with oedometer tests on various types of soils (Ip 7 and Ip 14 loams, Ip 27 calcareous clay). Various initial conditions of moisture content and compaction have been tested. The following have been established: the more plastic the soil is, the more slowly the settlements occur; settlements may occur even for degrees of compaction of 100% of Normal Proctor Optimum; the higher the moisture content of the soil is, the more important are the settlements; the observed settlements are much less important when the samples are compacted in a static way than with the Proctor rammer.
