COMPARISON OF TWO METHODS OF DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
The two methods used are based on Road Notes 29 and 31 as used in the UK and the Indian method according to IRC:37 1970--guidelines for the design of flexible pavements. Details are given of the recommended procedure for data collection using traffic census data to determine the cummulative number of standard 8200kg axles that will pass over the road pavement during the period of its design life. The road notes 29 and 31 can then be used to determine the thickness of sub-base, base and surfacing once the subgrade CBR and design life in cummulative standard axles are known. In an example to compare the two designs, the road note 29 method gave a total pavement thickness which was 100mm thicker than that required by IRC:37. However, the same pavement thickness is required according to IRC:37, whether it is for a design life of five or ten years; this does not appear to be logical. As the Indian method does not take into account the actual damaging effects of the spectra of axle loadings, it is recommended that design charts similar to those in the Road Notes are developed for Indian conditions.
