EAST MOORS VIADUCT GROWS BY SEGMENTS

The article describes the progress in the construction of the 913 long concrete glued segmental bridge forming part of the 30 km Cardiff peripheral distributor road. The 50 tonne pre-cast segments are now being erected, positioned, glued together and pre-stressed at the rate of some 10 units per week. The viaduct, the longest of its type in the UK, is also the first to be constructed with a trapezoidal box section. The 263 units used to form the 15-span, s-shaped in plan, are being pre-cast on site, largely for economic reasons. Units are match-cast to ensure that they key together exactly when erected. Because of the carved geometry, no two segments are the same, and adjustments are made in the special hydraulically operated steel mould. A railway crossing has been temporarilly spanned with a Bailey bridge allowing deck erection to continue without interfering with rail traffic. (TRRL)
