GEOTEXTILES IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION
GEOTEXTIEL IN DE WEGENBOUW
The separating function of geotextiles, for use between subgrade and basecourse, and advantages concerning filtration properties are described. The reinforcement functions of woven geotextiles, namely: (1) horizontal reinforcement (increase of the stiffness modulus of the roadbase); (2) membrane reinforcement (spreading of the load and/or discharge of the subgrade), are discussed. An investigation on aggregate savings and on increase of bearing capacity due to application of woven geotextiles is carried out. It is concluded that to achieve a maximum bearing capacity increase and to gain maximum aggregate savings in relation to costs of the fabrics, a strength of these fabrics in the range 40 kn/m,e=240 kn/m to 200 kn/m,e=1300 kn/m is required.
