TAILING BEHAVIOUR ON MOTORWAYS

VOLGGEDRAG OP AUTOSNELWEGEN

Field data on driving and platoon behaviour have been studied. It seems that tailing behaviour is very constant in nature. There seems to be a general and constant group climate. Average gap length in the fast lane is 1,2 sec, in the slow lane 2,5 sec. The first is quite characteristic, the latter varies between 2,0 and 2,9 sec. Only rain can change these characteristics (10-15% upwards). Platoons of more than 10 vehicles on the fast lane are not influenced by traffic density. Suspected downstream traffic congestion is the strongest incentive to changes in tailing pattern (+20% during peak hours) and this seems the justification for giving more actual traffic information to the road users.
