CHICANES FOR REDUCING SPEED

The World Traffic Commission of the International Touring Alliance discussed the question of whether, under certain circumstances, it is desirable to install road humps in order to limit motor vehicle speeds. This discussion led to the following recommendations: above all, in the interest of motorists, it is advisable to augment road safety by taking steps related to the infrastructure designed to reduce speeds or to maintain moderate limits for motor vehicles on those streets and in those areas where it is necessary for traffic to circulate slowly. The installation of road humps, which is one way to slow down motor vehicles, is advisable on those streets and in those areas where moderate speeds are indispensable. Generally speaking, the installation of road humps is not advised: on streets which are a part of the community's main road network; on roads outside of built-up areas; on roads designed or earmarked for the transport of dangerous materials; on streets carrying public transportation vehicles; as street outlets; if no alternative routing is available; on streets with heavy truck traffic; on principal cycling itineraries. Humps to be installed must be uniform. They must be covered with a characteristic pavement over the entire surface and they must satisfy certain conditions of traffic engineering.
