STRUCTURAL CALCULATIONS FOR LARGE TANKERS

The recent rapid growth in size of ships and especially of tankers has originated structural problems of great complexity which cannot be solved with traditional means of calculations. The experience in fact which has greatly contributed to the developments performed up to few years ago, cannot be very effective any longer as a consequence of the effervescent trend in size increase and of the empiricism of the traditional calculation processes. This has made it necessary to introduce new and more complete means of investigation in order to evaluate quantitatively the difficulties of the problems connected with the design and the construction of tankers. In order to facilitate the work of the ship designer some indications are given of the calculation procedures at the present time applied by R.I.NA. for the reasons given above in addition to the calculations required by the Rules. It is also appropriate to clarify that the results obtained with these calculation procedures are to be considered essentially as means of comparison among different types of structures. The present calculations in fact, although much more complete than any others carried out up to now, are still lacking sufficient experimental confirmation.
