Traffic Safety Facts 2020 Data: Summary of Motor Vehicle Crashes
Motor vehicle travel is a major means of transportation in the United States, providing an unparalleled degree of mobility. Traffic crashes took the lives of 38,824 people in 2020. Compared to 2019 there was a 6.8-percent increase in fatalities, but a 16.7-percent decrease in the estimated number of people injured in 2020. The estimated number of police-reported crashes declined 22.3 percent from 2019 to 2020. This fact sheet includes information on the ten-year trend; states; behavior; people; vehicles; crash locations; and economic costs.
