IN SITU HORIZONTAL STRESS FROM PRESSUREMETER TESTS

The self-boring pressuremeter test represents a promising method to evaluate the in situ horizontal stress, provided one carefully selects and controls the installation procedures appropriate to the soil investigated. The paper presents the interpretation of the in situ horizontal stress from 21 self-boring pressuremeter tests in two Norwegian marine clay deposits. Eight different methods of data interpretation were compared. "Good quality" pressuremeter curves (i.e. monotonically increasing pressure, without inflection point) led to a prediction of horizontal stress within 5 to 10% of the stress believed the true in situ stress. The satisfactory prediction of in situ horizontal stress is especially significant since a reliable "initial pressure" (Po) is absolutely essential for derivation of undrained shear strength and shear modulus from the pressuremeter expansion curve.
