AUTOMATED ASSEMBLY GAINS GROUND
In Europe, manufacturing engineers are investigating the possibilities of applying robots and automation to automotive assembly work. For automatic assembly to progress, two basic conditions are recognized: vehicle design must be adapted to make the assembly steps less complicated; and as many sub-units as possible must be pre-assembled. The extent to which this is being done by the auto industry in various European countries is discussed in this article.
