TESTING AND ANALYSIS OF A CURVED CONTINUOUS BOX GIRDER MODEL
The results obtained when four methods of analysis are applied to a curved, continuous, single cell box girder bridge model, are presented. The beam-on-elastic foundation method (modified for curvature) and the equivalent grid method, are essentially approximate solutions but are shown to be useful design aids despite some substantial discrepancies in soffit, tangential and radial stresses. The more exact finite strip and finite element procedures give excellent predictions for all stresses and deflections. The greatest errors occur under points of concentrated load where both methods require mesh refinement to improve accuracy. The finite strip method may also require additional harmonics in the load and stress series in some cases. Nevertheless it is concluded that the finite strip method is a very acceptable compromise between accuracy and economy of solution effort. (TRRL)
