DEVELOPMENTS IN TRENCH EXCAVATION AND REINSTATEMENT

The paper describes the likely pattern of BGC's future workload involving excavation and the reasons behind it. The development and implementation of both self-propelled, earth boring moles for laying new pipes and various methods of lining old pipes for renewal purposes are covered. Where trenching cannot be avoided, pavement saws, excavators with narrow buckets and chain trenchers have been the subject of development and are being used to a greater extent. Most of the cost saving potential of these narrow trenching techniques arises from reduced volumes of backfill and reduced areas of reinstatement. Training in the correct procedures and provision of the appropriate materials and equipment are important facets of good reinstatement. This has required experimental work to be carried out in a trench reinstatement context, to ascertain the best methods and materials to achieve high standard economic reinstatement. These can differ significantly from those applicable to new road construction. (Author/TRRL)
