LOOKING AT LIGHTING FOR TOWN AND CITY CENTRES

A brief outline of the history of street lighting with particular reference to Norwich is given by the author who recounts his experience as chief electrical engineer for the City of Norwich. Details are given of the work carried out by his department. Various systems of lighting are compared and opinions given as to their effectiveness in practice. The problem of wall-mounted street lighting is examined and advice offered on the procedure for approaching building owners or occupiers. Floodlighting buildings and the lighting of pedestrianised areas are found to be of particular interest to the lighting engineer and suggestions are made for lighting signs. Problems encountered in lighting town and city centres include damage by vandals and the need for constant supervision of work is stressed. (TRRL)
