TRAFFIC SAFETY OR PERSONAL COMFORT

VEILIGHEID OF COMFORT?

Many works are carried out by traffic engineers because it is assumed that they will increase traffic safety. Often there has been no research to show that this will be the case. That is an omission as research has proved that some measures do not give satisfactory results. The reason for carrying out some works is not the traffic safety measured by the number of accidents, but the feeling of safety in traffic. As the human being loves personal comfort this should be a good reason to initiate the works that can improve it. It is better, at least, to use personal comfort as an argument to take any measure in traffic engineering than to use other reasons, such as traffic safety, which cannot be proved or which eventually prove to be incorrect.
