OPTIMIZATION OF THE INTERSECTION SHAPE IN THE CASE OF ONE-WAY TRAFFICKED CYCLE PATHS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS

OPTIMALISERING VAN DE VORMGEVING VAN KRUISPUNTEN MET EENRICHTINGSFIETSPADEN BUITEN DE BEBOUWDE KOM; VERSLAG VAN EEN VERKENNING

With the help of traffic accident data from some provinces in the Netherlands the problem of the hazards of cycle paths on intersections is described. It is supposed that these hazards are caused by the intersections' geometric design. There are differing opinions on this design and these opinions are described in this paper. Conclusions drawn from these opinions lead to formulation of some relevant hypotheses on this subject. Finally, these hypotheses are analysed by means of the traffic accident data for a small number of intersections with one-way trafficked cycle paths in Gelderland, on which cyclists keep on the right of way. These analyses consist of correlation and log-linear analyses. Its results indicate in the present case how to shape some intersection elements in a way that is safe for traffic. (TRRL)
