MODELS THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE PLANNING OF BICYCLE FACILITIES
MODELLEN TEN BEHOEVE VAN DE EVALUATIE VAN FIETSVOORZIENINGEN
Mostly bicycle facilities are not planned because of a shortage in the capacity of existing transport facilities. The capacity of the transportation system is big enough to handle the bicycle transport. However, the necessity of making bicycle facilities arises by the fact that the existing transport facilities are too dangerous for cyclists merely caused by car transport. Therefore it is better to use criteria such as the expected accidents, possible injuries etc instead of the bicycle flows. Those criteria are dependent on the flows of cars and bicycles and on the age of traffic participants and the traffic situation. It is possible to observe or to calculate the flows. When trips cannot be totally observed or changes have to be predicted, calculating is preferred, which can be done by using a traditional forecasting model. Very useful is a classification in different population categories with different accident susceptibilities. Travel resistance can be calculated from time and energy used by cyclists. Extra attention has to be given to schools. In addition, religion is an important factor influencing school choices and consequently it has to be included as an explaining variable. The position of sport accommodation has also to be taken into account. (TRRL)
