EXPERIMENT WITH TACTILE GUIDE STRIP FOR THE BLIND AND PARTIALLY SIGHTED

EXPERIMENT "LOOPROUTE VOOR BLINDEN EN SLECHTZIENDEN"

An experiment has been set up to investigate whether the tactile guide strips can improve the mobility in traffic of the blind and the partially sighted in general, and in complex traffic situations (for example at intersections) in particular. It is also hoped that other traffic participants become aware of the fact that the guide strip is meant as a route for the visually handicapped and that as a consequence they will avoid leaving obstacles on or along the guide strip, so that the blind and partially sighted are able to move freely. One of the conditions was that the guide strip was capable of extension in a technically easy way and at fairly low cost. For the guide strip flexible soft rubber tiles 60 x 60 cm are used. The first part of the experiment has been constructed and was put into operation on November 2, 1982. It consists of a guide strip leading from Apeldoorn railway station to a bus station. The second part of the experiment will be an extension of the guide strip at the platform of the railway station. The experiment will be evaluated on its user and technical aspects. (TRRL)
