HESITATING TRAFFIC POLICIES BREED HESITATING USERS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

WEIFELEND BELEID KWEEKT WEIFELENDE REIZIGERS

In principle a traffic policy directed towards stimulation of public transportation and of bicycle usage, and towards a certain reduction in car traffic intensity is widely accepted in the Netherlands. But in practice, this policy is carried out with little enthusiasm, with hesitation and erratically. Even an increase of the use of public transportation, and of bicycles, and a stabilization of car traffic intensity, all consistent tendencies over the last few years, did not lead to a marked change in attitude by the policy makers. This is attributed to prejudices against public transportation among policy makers. It is considered important to tackle these prejudices. (TRRL)
