INDICATORS FOR SAFETY LEVELS FOR TRAFFIC AREAS, A STUDY PROPOSAL

KENCIJFERS VOOR DE VERKEERSONVEILIGHEID

The proposal deals with the possibilities of quantifying and standardizing traffic safety and is intended to: monitor national developments; draw attention to traffic areas with low safety levels; determine the effects of traffic measures; weigh traffic safety against secondary negative effects. The choice of indicators for safety levels is dependent on the objective. For the comparison between traffic situations, indicators are proposed concerning accidents and casualties related to the amount of traffic over a given period. Some practical studies produce tentative figures. Further working-out requires a national measuring programme to obtain periodical data on the amount of traffic. (Author/TRRL)
