CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE OVERLAYS OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS ON TRUNK ROAD A2

The design and construction of continuously reinforced concrete (crc) overlays on flexible pavements of trunk road A2 are described. The existing pavements were dual carriageways of flexible construction built in 1975-76; isolated sections had failed completely and the whole length was approaching failure. Three 1 km and one 0.9 km crc overlays were constructed during 1981. These overlays are all of nominal 200 mm thickness and have a steel content of 0.65 per cent; anchorages are provided at both ends of each overlay. Construction was in one-lane widths by a conventional paving train using ready-mixed concrete. (Author/TRRL)
