GETTING THE MESSAGE ACROSS. SYSTEMS OF COMMUNICATION WITH DRIVER

The author discusses the following aspects: operation of police motorway control room, including procedures and terminal equipment; motorway electrical equipment with terminals in police control rooms, i.e. emergency telephones; closed circuit TV cameras; automatic incident detection; fog, ice and wind instruments; matrix signals; emergency signing to deal with unforeseen incidents including lane and carriageway closures and restrictions on the Severn Bridge which has its own special problems; motorway signalling systems covering the history of various installations, the problems which police have experienced, their efficiency in connection with driver observance, defects in the systems, problems which have occurred with design, experiments with alternatives carried out in recent years and some suggestions for the future.
