THE USE OF VIDEO PHOTOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
This paper outlines the use of video and other photographic systems which have been developed and implemented at the Ulster Polytechnic as a means of assessing, comparing, recording and researching highway engineering problems. The use of modern equipment has for many years been a valuable tool in the educational realm, but the adaption of such equipment to monitor research experimental work has been an innovative addition to the audio-visual repertoire. A comparative study of various media for the visual structural assessment of a highway structure was carried out and the implementation of the authors findings in the assessments of the major structural defects on a railway bridge are described in detail. The advantages of immediate playback; allowing monitoring and retaking where necessary; and the stop/hold facilities of the video systems have proved beneficial in other distinctive areas of highway engineering viz: (a) assessment of structural deflection in a pavement; (b) measurement of spray generation in a pavement; (C) wheel movement in SCRIM assessment - and their development is also outlined. In addition to the above but on purely educational front, tapes have been especially produced to cover a wide range of topics, not only for lecturing purposes but also for individual tuition. This paper endeavours to demonstrate the potential uses for video tapes and suggests future developments which may be of interest to the highway engineering profession. This report is presented in thee form of an abstract. (Author/TRRL)
