SEABORNE COAL AND THE ENERGY CRISIS

While many people consider that coal will be the saviour of energy supplies after last years oil crisis, some serious doubts on future supplies are cast by the latest study carried out by Maritime Transport Research entitled 'Seaborne Coal and the Energy Crisis'. The report foresees a scarcity of available coal supplies around 1980 with Europe being hit particularly hard. By 1985 the supply position should ease although Europe may still be suffering if the development of nuclear energy is delayed. As far as seaborne trade is concerned, MTR suggest it will grow, 'perhaps by 30% up to 1980 when it would then plateau before falling off after 1985. In dealing with nuclear progress the report analyses three different possibilities. As to coal supplies MTR has examined available supplies within Europe and Japan and also all major exporting countries. In the former where output has been declining, it may be possible to stabilize production and in the latter, because governments now have a greater awareness of the energy situation and the value of coal, exports are likely to rise but relatively slowly. In this situation and assuming the nuclear programme progresses reasonably well, MTR forecast that import demand in Europe is likely to peak in 1980, declining again by 1985. In Japan the fortunes of the steel industry will be a dictating factor. It is in this five year gap that coal supplies may become scarce, MTR suggest.
