FORMWORK PRESSURES

The distribution of concrete pressure against a vertical form face can be explained by the pore-water pressure theory. Site measurements have shown that about 90% of the maximum concrete pressure on the formwork comes from the pore-water pressure and therefore the key to understanding the mechanisms controlling the concrete pressure on formwork lies in understanding the development and dispersal of pore-water pressure. When unsealed Douglas fir plywood formwork with normal release agents is used, the formwork pressures may be substantially lower than the values estimated by the Ciria method. (Author/TRRL)
