ROAD ALIGNMENT DESIGN USING POLYNOMIALS

This paper presents an overview of the application of polynomials in the design of horizontal and vertical road alignments. Various features and procedures are outlined, and relevant criteria discussed. It is shown that with the aid of a computer and a suitable program, the use of polynomials offers great flexibility in the choice of options, and will generally lead to an economically viable and aesthetically attractive solution.
