INTERACTIVE DESIGN OF BURIED FLEXIBLE PIPES - A FRESH APPROACH FROM THE BASIC PRINCIPLES
This paper introduces a new approach to the design and analysis of soil surrounded, circular pipe sections subject to external load. A composite system comprising both pipe and soil is taken as the basic structural unit, and the loads, structural parameters and performance criteria for this system are defined. These important preliminaries enable a systematic interpretation of two-dimensional elastic theory solutions for the stresses, deformations and stability of buried thin-wall cylinders, leading to separate first-order expressions for the effects of uniform and distortional components of load. Because of significant second-order effects, simple superposition of these results is not, however, appropriate. The first-order, small deflection elastic analysis has therefore been extended to make approximate allowance for: (I) changes in pipe geometry at large deflections, and (II) the reduction in buckling resistance caused by out-of-round deflection of the pipe ring. Finally, the complete range of predicted pipe deflection and buckling response for any combination of loads and pipe and soil properties has been plotted on a series of non-dimensional charts. These charts form the basis of a comprehensive design method for buried flexible pipes being developed on behalf of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. The proposed approach is set out in outline. (TRRL)
