INJURIES IN MOPED AND MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS. A FIVE YEAR SERIES

SKADOR EFTER MOPED- OCH MOTORCYKELOLYCKOR

A retrospective study of all hospitalized victims of motorcycle and moped accidents in the years 1977-1981 in the county of Skaraborg is presented. Using hospital admission records 204 injured motorcyclists and 172 moped casualties were identified. Moped riders were more often injured in car crashes, whereas overturning of the motorcycle accounted for the majority of collisions among motorcyclists. Head injuries were most common among moped riders (46 percent), while injuries to the extremities were more frequent among motorcyclists (47 percent). Patients involved in motorcycle accidents suffered injuries to the upper extremity (17 percent) more frequently than the moped riders (10 percent). This pattern is partly explained by the lower speed of mopeds. At the moment of collision the rider is thrown against the other vehicle (primary impact), whereas the motorcyclist due to a higher collision energy is hurled over the car and injured by the secondary impact on the road surface. After the introduction of helmet use laws for moped riders too, a significant decrease of head injuries could be noted. The difference in severity of injuries was surprisingly small between moped and motorcycle riders. (Author/TRRL)
