EVALUATING SHARED PARKING FOR NEW DEVELOPMENTS
An attempt is made to define the land use of which shared parking may be appropriate and also, the considerations that should be taken into account when evaluating such proposals. Experience has indicated that reciprocal or shared parking may be appropriate for the following uses: theatres, restaurants, and hotels. Although there are no hard and fast percentages and rates that can be applied to determine how much reciprocal parking can be permitted, some guidelines are presented. Studying existing similar facilities for 24-hour parking accumulations either separately or as a part of overall traffic impact studies is an essential part of the planning process. Where a mixed use site is being developed and construction is being phased, the optimum method of planning parking needs may be to study parking accumulations as the site develops and adjusting parking plans for the final phase based on the demands generated by the facilities already constructed.
