CONCRETE STRENGTH AND ULTIMATE STRENGTH IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES

BETONGHAALLFASTHET OCH BROTTSAEKERHET I FAERDIG BETONGKONSTRUKTION

An investigation has earlier been carried out by the Swedish National Road Administration in order to study the concrete strength of the slipform concreted piers of the Angered Bridge in Gothenburg. It could then be concluded that the observed level of strength seemed to be in agreement with the strength of other conventionally cast concrete structures, while the results obtained have a more general validity. The data available from this investigation can from a probabilistic point of view be used to determine the ultimate strength of finished concrete structures as compared to the strength of the corresponding standard cube specimens. Based on that study a structural safety analysis can be made, from which it can be concluded that the structural safety of concrete structures as far as the compressive strength is concerned, is partly depending on correct mixing of the concrete and partly depending on proper handling of concrete with respect to compaction, curing, etc. Thus the quality control must comprise both checking the concrete mix by testing standard cube specimens and checking if compaction, curing etc have been performed satisfactorily by a final test of the concrete strength in the finished structure.
