PRIOR INFORMATION AND THE ACCURACY OF TURNING FLOW ESTIMATES

In this paper the problems of estimating turning flows at single intersections from counts of traffic volumes on the approaches is considered. To obtain reasonably accurate estimates of turning flows some prior information regarding turning probabilites is required. Alternative assumptions concerning available prior information about turning probabilities are tested using the same basic data-set. Empirical probability distributions of the errors in estimates based on the various assumptions are presented. These may be used to predict the expected accuracy when the methods are applied in similar situations. It is shown that the accuracy of the estimated flows depends on the nature of the prior information. (Author/TRRL)
