STRENGTH ANALYSIS OF SHELL STRUCTURES WITH STIFFENERS BY THE FINITE STRIP METHOD
A structure consisting of shallow shells with stiffeners is usually analyzed by the method simulated to folded plates or three dimensional frameworks in actual ship-hull-design. These methods of analysis cannot take account of the effect of curvature of shell. One universal and powerful method for this subject is finite element method. However, the finite element method has inconveniences such that extensive calculation due to a large number of degrees of freedom is usually needed and in addition increasing number of degrees of freedom does not necessarily assure an increase in accuracy except in a few particular cases. This paper presents an analytical method on strength of shallow shells with stiffeners by an improved finite strip method. Displacement functions give exact solutions for some special cases which satisfy the equilibrium equation of shallow shells or very close ones to them for other cases and this procedure is effective to decrease discretization errors. Some examples are shown for the cases of analyzing bending of shallow shells without and with stiffeners of which all edges are simply supported. The results prove that this method is an effective means for analyzing shell structures.
