FALSEWORK AND FORMWORK--STATE OF THE ART
A review is presented of the changing fashions in falsework and formwork as seen in Europe and North America. The first material used for scaffolding work was timber and this continued until relatively recently in the USA. Britain having fewer timber resources progressed to the steel tube and "universal coupler" in 1916 and variations of the steel frame continued to be developed. The different types developed on the continent and systems in use today are described. Formwork was also largely timber until the last war when the concept of large steel panels with a plywood surface was imported from the USA. The quest for better finishes with fewer joints is resulting in the development of larger storey height panel systems. The present popularity of aluminium over steel is described and mention is made of climbing formwork, slipforming and "flying" or "table" forms. (TRRL)
