ORWELL BRIDGE - DESIGN
The paper identifies the position of the Orwell bridge in the highway network of East Anglia and describes studies that led to the present location of the crossing. Reference is made to the initial investigations and the comparisons on which the final form of structure was based. Information is presented on the design philosophy, the structural analysis and design of the bridge and on the special investigations, particularly relating to the pile foundations and the provisions against ship collision, which were carried out during the design period. The relationships between the method of construction and the design requirements during construction and on completion are discussed. Reference is made to design changes introduced at the request of the contractor. Data are given on the movement bearings incorporated in the structure and on the extensive performance testing that was carried out on these bearings during fabrication. The provisions for future inspection and maintenance of the structure are described and aspects 382113. (Author/TRRL) the design are commented on. See also TRIS abstract No. 273614.
