VARIATIONAL METHODS AND UPPER BOUND THEOREM
A security functional based on the upper bound theorem and related to slope stability problems is defined and a system of equations is obtained by vanishing its first variation. The extremals of the functional and its absolute minimum can be obtained from this system.
