ETHANOL FROM CROPS IN AUSTRALIA
The recent massive changes in the outlook for crude oil supplies related to the downturn in prices make it prudent to re-examine the reasons for considering the production of alcohol from crops. Costs, relative to existing fuel prices, are one important consideration. Others are fuel self- sufficiency, balance of payments, employment, agricultural and other benefits, the meeting of special needs, and the impact of energy crops on land use and food production. Requirements to promote crop- based fuels are considered and some of these aspects are illustrated by summarising current research work. Assessment of the national support needed for implementation of a crops to alcohol programme is discussed. This paper is No. 83007. (TRRL)
