BIOMASS FUELS - HOW REALISTIC A CONTINGENCY SUPPLY OPTION?

The potential for utilising biofuels as a contingency option during periods of fuel shortage in Australia is assessed. Whilst the technology is available for some fuels, notably ethanol- petrol blends, biogas and vegetable oil- diesel blends, there are many implementational issues that need attention if these fuels are to be used. Further, the distribution of the biomass resource base suggests that these fuels could only play a significant role on a regional basis. However, the greatest constraint to utilising biofuels as contingency options is the nature and duration of anticipated fuel shortages. It is postulated that the duration of likely fuel shortages and their effect on fuel supplies is relatively modest and is incompatible with the leadtimes of introducing most biofuel options canvassed.
