APPLICATION OF CORRECTION AND WEIGHTING FACTORS TO OBTAIN A REPRESENTATIVE DATA BASE
In 1981, Socialdata conducted a self-administered diary survey on transportation behaviour; 42000 households were included in which more than 100000 persons lived. The study was done for the "nachbarschaftsverband Stuttgart". Diverse factors which cannot be influenced by the researcher affect the survey situation, and thus, the results of the survey. Methodological standards, however, are now so advanced that it is possible to do the necessary correcting and weighting of the data. The following methods can be used for this purpose: - adjustment of the different selection probability of the elements of the sample; - adjustment of disproportionate distribution of the sampling days; - averaging out seasonal differences; - sociodemographic and regional weighting; - accounting for the transport behaviour of foreign workers; - correction of non-reported trips; - correction of non-response. The application of these corrective measures is demonstrated using the Stuttgart survey as an example. There then follows a discussion of the most important variables used to describe transport behaviour. These variables, listed below, are studied from an interactive point of view: - share of vehicles; - average number of trips; - modal split; - mode by purpose. Most publications in recent years have dealt with the design and development of such corrective measures. This paper demonstrates that these approaches can now be applied in large quantitative surveys. It also shows how this can be done. The validity of the resulting data is thus considerably improved.
