RURAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION CONFERENCE TARGETS PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTIVITY

Unlike its five predecessors, the 6th National Conference on Rural Public Transportation, held in August 1983 at the University of Southern Maine, in Portland, concentrated on a single theme: system productivity and performenace. There was a common concern that rural and small urban systems would need to give much greater emphasis than ever before to increase future cost efficiency, productivity, effectiveness, and overall performance. This article reviews some of the presentations given at various conference sessions describing what agencies in several state and localities have done to improve productivity. They focus on such aspects as personnel management, developing performance standards, data acquisition and financing.
