PIPELINE DESIGN TO REDUCE ANCHOR DAMAGE
As a result of adverse marine environment or soils conditions peculiar to some areas of the world, some submarine pipelines cannot be buried, and are consequently exposed to damage from such objects as dragging anchors and fishing boards. This paper examines the technical and financial aspects of providing armored concrete coatings and engineered backfill on pipelines to prevent damage from bottom-dragging objects. The author outlines the basic criteria to be considered when seeking a solution to the technical and economic aspects of pipeline protection. Other considerations which are discussed include survey requirements to determine the most feasible form of protection, site investigations, and pipeline design. The author comments on the action of dragging anchors for selected anchor designs. Available pipeline protection systems which are reviewed include encasement of the pipe in standard Gunited concrete, high strength concrete armored coating, shaped concrete section, special reinforcing steel in armored concrete, standard concrete applied to pipe with engineered backfill cover, and use of extra steel. A hypothetical case is examined for the purpose of illustrating a rational approach to the problem. In conclusion, the author notes that the state-of-the-art has been sufficiently developed to permit the engineer to design an adequate pipe protection system.
