THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE RIVER STOUR BRIDGE, WIMBORNE BYPASS
Design and construction procedures are outlined for a three-span continuous composite bridge deck incorporating the use of curved plate girders and high strength concrete using cement/pfa replacement. An unconventional method of prestressing the deck in-situ by the use of hydraulic jacks was used. The design has been compared with the results of a full scale load test. A central 34M long main span is supported between piers on the river bank and 18M side spans provide an area for flood relief. Composite universal beam diaphragms are designed for transverse load distributions. A computer program was used to produce influence lines, settlement, temperature and shrinkage moments. Temperature stress distributions were obtained by transferring the composite sections to the equivalent steel sections and small stresses of up to 0.5n/sq mm tension were added to the concrete stress over the piers and 3.5n/sq mm compression was added to the concrete at mid span. The five longitudinal plate girders were made in grade 50 C steel and stiffened laterally by composite universal beam diaphragms. (TRRL)
