SAFE BIKE ROUTES TAX CITY PLANNERS

Cycle use on Britain's roads has doubled over the last eight years and now accounts for five percent of all journeys. Government figures indicate that for every 1000M kilometres travelled, 116 cyclists were killed or seriously injured. The figure for cars is only nine. In urban areas where the growth of cycling has been most marked, it is virtually impossible to provide totally independent cycle routes. The author reviews various possible measures for increasing cyclists' safety, particularly at junctions where cyclists are up to 15 times more at risk than car drivers. (TRRL)
