OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW TECHNOLOGY IN PARKING METERS
The conventional coin-operated, clockwork, single-bay parking meter requires a high level of manpower for its operation and the enforcement of such a system of street parking. The necessary technology is available for local authorities to develop a superior parking system. The article suggests a possible electronics-based system as a basis for discussion both by local authorities responsible for installing and operating such systems, and also the manufacturers. A number of alternatives to the conventional parking meter are considered in which users would enter a form of credit card into a meter and also a personal identification number (PIN) if necessary. A user would then also enter a parking bay number and length of parking time needed. Accounting methods for such parking systems are discussed. (TRRL)
