LORRY AND COACH OVERTAKING ON THE MOTORWAY

To evaluate motorway driving behaviour by car and lorry drivers, the study details a description of over 1000 lorry and coach manoeuvres carried out on the M1 motorway. Every observed instance of lorry or coach overtaking behaviour was classified according to lane position after the manoeuvre. Results, which are analysed showing traffic flow for both lorries and coaches, are tabulated according to overtaking procedure. It is concluded that as traffic flow increases so overtaking manoeuvres are forced on drivers with greater frequency although drivers do not generally encroach because the traffic volume is reducing available options. Where lane encroachments do occur, they follow an expected pattern in which vehicles remained in a faster lane after encroachment. The findings suggest an increase in potential danger as traffic volume increases although this might be prevented by an agreed code of practice regarding land use and traffic speeds. (TRRL)
