GLI IMPALCATI DELLA CARNIA - TARVISIO

This article describes and illustrates the method of deck construction on the viaducts of the Carnia-Tarvis motorway section. The choice of a closed box section solution in the form of prestressed reinforced concrete caisson beams or prefrabricated box sections was based on the following reasons: less structural weight and thus less weight transmitted to the foundations; less deformation because of greater flexural and torsional rigidity; less fatigue stress of materials; aesthetically pleasing aspect; lends itself to modern industrial prefrabrication criteria with a consequent reduction in construction time. Launching and assembly techniques are briefly described and illustrated. (TRRL)
