URBAN STRUCTURE, TRAFFIC SYSTEM AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION. ANALYSIS OF THE SCAPE STUDY

During the 1960s extensive calculations were carried out at the Department of Town Planning at Chalmers University of Technology, regarding the land use and cost consequences of various plan designs. This was known as the SCAPE study. The study included calculations of traffic mileage and movement costs for various types of traffic, but no calculation was made of the energy consumed. The purpose of the present study was to calculate, with the SCAPE study as a background, the energy consumption for passenger transport (by car and public transport respectively) within the central urban area for various community structures. The energy consumption was specified in kwh/inhabitant and 24-hour period for three urban sizes, 25000, 75000 and 225000 inhabitants. The results show that (1) the energy consumption increases with increased urban size. The ratio between 25000, 75000 and 225000 inhabitants is 1:1.6:2.5. (2) the energy consumption is closely linked to the building density (the plot ratio). The ratio between a very dense and very sparse settlements is 1:1.8. (Author/TRRL)
