RECLAMATION OF SPOIL WITH HOPPER SUCTION DREDGES

West Germany's Federal Government is by law responsible for the construction and maintenance of the inland waterways. A major share of the operations consists of regular removal of the spoil carried continuously into the shipping routes. Within the overall maintenance work, current dredging operations are an essential cost factor. For the removal of such drifts, consisting of coarse sand, medium sand, fine sand and silt, government-owned dredgers, particularly hopper dredgers, are preferred. In most cases hopper suction dredgers are the ideal equipment for maintenance work. Dredging, and spoil disposal techniques are described.
